We all know designer and entrepreneur Esme Palaganas for the cool and sleek style under her label Basic Movement. She’s also known as a good collaborator and artist supporter. As someone who grew up in the province, she learned to value everyone who helped her get to where she is today and she’s been very passionate about cultivating the same supportive environment among fellow artists and entrepreneurs ever since. Enter Basic Movement Club: the events and pop-up arm of her brand. BMC has hosted pop-ups and roundtable discussions in the past, and now they’re taking it up a notch by doing a series of collaborations with multiple artists from different fields.

The Basic Movement Club: Artist Series kicks off with a collaboration between Basic Movement and illustrator and designer Raxenne Maniquiz. What started out with having a design embroidered on a denim jacket ended up as a capsule collection with pieces ranging from custom-printed tops to embroidered jeans. “Di talaga ako ma-print kaya this is a real push for me,” says Esme. Raxenne is known for her elaborate designs and love for contrasting elements, so having her flora and fauna prints on Basic Movement’s signature silhouettes makes for a refreshing collection.
“I also really wanted to create something that Raxenne felt she needed in the market,” says Esme. Besides the print, she consulted on how to make the tops more bust-friendly with Raxenne, a good sis blessed with insights and who just wants to help others who are struggling, too. They also worked on designing multi-purpose Silk Cerutti scarves (a fave!) and having posters and giftwrapping paper of the same flora and fauna prints used on the clothing.
To celebrate the pre-launch of the capsule collection, Basic Movement Club hosted Passiflora: Basic Movement x Raxenne Maniquiz Weekend at Persephone – A Seasonal Kitchen last Sept. 21-22.
To celebrate the pre-launch of the capsule collection, Basic Movement Club hosted Passiflora: Basic Movement x Raxenne Maniquiz Weekend at Persephone – A Seasonal Kitchen last Sept. 21-22. Persephone’s chef Jessie Roasa, Proudly Promdi’s Ken Alonso and Baker on East’s Chino Cruz served a collaborative eight-course menu — inspired by the flora collection — to a good mix of guests on the night of the 21st, while the 22nd was an entire day dedicated to the pop-up event.
In the true spirit of BMC, the dinner was really about getting to know the other guests at the table and being eased in by the Passiflora F&B collaborators with a damn good meal. Proudly Promdi’s Mestiza (Bugnay wine, rosé/gin, lemon, mango, basil) packed a memorable punch as the apertivo; Persephone’s Manzo Con Risotto (tenderloin steak, goat kaldereta risotto, grilled vegetables, golden raisins, parmesan) made for a hearty secondo; Baker on East’s Coconut & Banana leaf Semifreddo (smoked salt, milk chocolate ganache, local lime curd, candied dalandan, polenta sbrisolona crumb/yellow mung bean) took the cake and left everyone wanting for seconds. The dinner conversation flowed well, much like the food and drink pairings. No pressure. The night was capped off by a performance from Olympia and a fun shopping party featuring select items from the BM x Raxenne collection. (The full capsule collection drops early October, btw!)
It might be too early to tell but if the first of what promises to be many BMC: Artist Series is any indication, the young local artists and entrepreneurs will be alright.
