Wanderland’s final lineup is like a trip through indie pop history

We’re seriously going back in time with Two Door Cinema Club and The Kooks.

You go to enough shows and you start to notice not just the way culture moves and shifts, but the way certain acts also explode into and fade out of relevance. In that respect, Wanderland Magic is like an anomaly concert, with retro and modern acts sharing the stage in what will be Wanderland’s first ever two-day festival.

We’ll be regressing back to our early 2010s selves with The Kooks and Two Door Cinema Club — everybody’s musical gateways into the wider world of indie pop and rock, back when Tumblr was still a thing and Helvetica was the pinnacle of typography. Going forward in time we’ve got more contemporary acts coming in, with Honne, Joan, and SG Lewis singing the body electronic; and Masego, JMSN and Mac Ayres bringing rhythm and blues to the show. The likes of Prep, Alina Baraz, Gabrielle Aplin and YouTube algorithm queen Clairo are also lineup highlights, their work in pop actively blurring the (some would say meaningless) line between indie and mainstream.

Top of the pops: Wanderland Magic is bringing in acts that will come to define this chapter of indie pop history, with the likes of Honne and Clairo taking the stage.

Of course it wouldn’t be an honest-to-goodness local festival if we just let the west steal the show. South Korea’s Adoy and Singapore’s Charlie Lim are bringing their brand of city pop to our city. And the homegrown acts in the lineup are a blend of legends and newcomers. Intertwined will be repping Cebu as the winner of the 2019 Wanderbattle, while Nathan & Mercury soulfully croon on stage as the competition’s first runner-up. Sandwich joins the lineup as the de facto veterans of the scene, while Reese Lansangan flexes as an OG multihyphenate. Clara Benin and Autotelic are like the ate and kuyas of the roster, while Unique is more the newly crowned prince of whatever blend of pop, rock and disco he’ll be blessing the stage with.

Both newcomers and seasoned festival goers are going to vibe to this lineup, just in different ways perhaps. You’ll also have the works of Wanderartist winners Venazir Martinez, Frances Dandan, Raco Ruiz and Joshua Panaligan. No word yet on who’s performing on which day, but you were planning on going both days anyway.

Wanderland Magic will be happening March 9 and 10 at the Filinvest City Event Grounds. Limited ticket bundles will be available until Feb. 8, available in SM Ticket outlets nationwide, and at wander-lastfestival.com.
