Start your journey to sustainable living at Pamana: a fashion auction

When was the last time you had a shirt that you wore once before banishing it to the depths of your closet? Count us guilty.

This is just one of the ways we produce waste – whether unconsciously or consciously. Mostly, we just choose to ignore the fact that everything we choose to throw away doesn’t magically disappear. Bringing your own baunan and using cloth towels are some common ways to reduce our consumption of the obvious waste items like plastic and paper, but what about clothes?

Enter the practice of upcycling, which involves extending the lifespan of an item of clothing that could just end up in a landfill. In other words: getting old or used clothes and breathing new life into them. The best way to do this is to get your clothes from the nearest ukay-ukay (budget-friendly, and eco-friendly!). If you find the chaos of an ukay too much, you can always make your way over to Pamana, a fashion auction organized by the UP Association of Clothing Technology Students.

All of the pre-loved items to be auctioned off were handpicked by the members. They all have killer style, so you’ll be sure to find something you’ll love forever. There’s a polka-dotted velvet top that fits right in with today’s velvet trend. They’ll also be selling a denim jacket with clear pockets, perfect for those days when you want to show off your new phone wallpaper

And if you think sustainable fashion is only for those with big budgets, think again. Bidding starts at P50, which is pretty much a steal considering that you don’t have to dig deep for these one-of-a-kind pieces.

Eco-friendly and budget-friendly? Count us in! All that and you get to hold a paddle like in those auctions you see in the movies. May the best bidder win.

Pamana: a fashion auction is on May 5, 2017 at 7PM, University Hotel, UP Diliman. Check out the event page for more details.
