Trusty sidekicks: five apps to keep your goals in check

Technology has once again proven to be our most trusty sidekick.

They say old habits die hard, but that doesn’t mean that we should just sit back, relax, and just be. When it comes to a bad habit, we often don’t do anything about it even though we’re already aware that it’s a problem. It’s easy to brush things off and save it for another day but with the new year comes new opportunities. This is your chance to change the game.

Achieving your goals might be challenging but it’s all just a matter of finding the right set of helping hands. Sometimes they come from a concerned friend or a nagging relative, but more often than not, it comes from friends called Google Play and the App Store . There are countless apps that can guide us to be better, it’s all just a matter of finding the right one as a definite companion for the year ahead.

Here are some apps that can help you be a better you this year. Listen up; your future self will thank you for it.

Stay hydrated

Everyone knows that they have to drink around 8 ounces of water a day to stay healthy. But somehow a good number of us just can’t seem to do it. There are a number of apps available to help you keep track of your water consumption, but they’re all pretty boring and not very motivating. Thanks to Plant Nanny, staying hydrated just got cuter. Instead of just simply reminding you to drink water, it adds a bit of fun to the mix with a rewards system and a cute new plant, which you can consider your little Tamagochi. As you continue to consume water throughout the day, your plant does too. The more water you drink the bigger your plant gets and the higher your level becomes. If you can’t drink water for yourself, at least do it for your plant.

Keep track of your expenses

Numbers can be scary, but it’s much scarier if they somehow turn zero, especially when your bank account is concerned. Keeping track of your finances shouldn’t be difficult when you have countless apps to your disposal. If you find yourself dumbfounded about where all your money has gone (probably food), it’s time to invest in a finance tracking app like Money Coach. They say the best time to start saving was yesterday. You’ve got some catching up to do.

Form good habits

No matter how enthusiastically we adopt better habits, sometimes our will power fails us. That’s when we need some backup. While bullet journalling has been all the rage since the beginning of the year, not everyone has the patience to keep up with it. Turn your goals into an actual game with Habitica. In the app, you can create your own 8-bit character, and add habits and tasks you want to be rewarded for. If you maintain a good habit, you get rewarded in XP (to level up) and Gold (to purchase new equipment with). Bad habits on the other hand deduct your HP. To all the gamers, this is made for you.

Don’t wake up exhausted

Stop complaining about how tired you are when you know it’s because you stayed up late the night before. That next episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine might be tempting, but Andy Samberg will forgive you if you save it for tomorrow. Before you head to bed, open your phone and set your alarm. Skip your built-in alarm clock and opt for Sleep Cycle. Instead of jerking out of bed and into the shower, the app will find the optimum time to wake you up. Maybe the good mood will have you singing some Debbie Reynolds.

Take a walk

Stop fixating solely on weight loss. Everyone should have some sort of exercise incorporated into their daily routine. You don’t have to lift heavy weights a la Hidilyn Diaz or start running a marathon tomorrow. A simple stroll around the park would do, even just to get a bit more sun. That may seem a bit boring, but you can make it enjoyable with the help of Wokamon. It’s a pedometer fitness game that incorporates the use of monsters. With it, you have your own virtual monsters that grow the further you go. You earn crystals through walking too, which you can use to purchase accessories for your monsters. There are around 1000 of them to unlock, so it’s time to take a walk.
