YS Sunday Self-care Package: Monument Valley 2, Crashing, and a new YS playlist

There are only few certain things in life, and one of them is that Sundays are for yourself. There are no obligations to attend to (if you will it so) it’s just you, a cup of joe, and whatever piece of pop culture you want to indulge in this week. And in all things, certain lessons can be learned.

We rounded up some unexpected discoveries from the things that made us happy this week.

Monument Valley 2

What it is

One word: beautiful. It’s a puzzle game where you navigate your way through beautiful, mind-boggling structures that can easily find its way in a trick-eye museum. You control the (silent princess) Ida, and her daughter in their path to… enlightenment, we think. Each chapter has its own life lesson, and some of the most stunning soundtrack and visuals to boot.

What we learned

“Some lessons must be learned alone. Solitude brings its own perspective.” Speaks for itself.

Where to get it

The app store. No final news on an Android version yet.

Crashing (2016)

What is it

A short British comedy series following the lives of poor millennials living as “property guardians” of abandoned buildings. For this season, they’re living in a large, unused hospital.

What we learned

Take a break from heavy documentaries and literature that you’ve been unsuccessfully attempting to finish for weeks. Sometimes, all you really need is a short but fun show to unwind to. The series isn’t really the kind of reality young Filipinos deal with but once you watch it, you’ll get why it’s relatable. You can binge-watch this in three hours, so go for it.

A Natural Woman: A Memoir by Carole King

What it is

It’s a collection of stories of Carole King’s life. To those unfamiliar, Carole King is an accomplished singer-songwriter known for her hit songs (You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman, It’s Too Late, You’ve Got a Friend, Where You Lead (yes, the Gilmore Girls theme song), among others. The bulk of the memoir talks about her experience in songwriting and working with music icons like James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Lou Adler, John Lennon, and Yoko Ono. Doesn’t get any better than that.

What we learned

Some people work well with others, but it will only be a matter of time before they realize that only they can direct their lives to greater heights. That, and women are awesome songwriters.

Where to get it

Here or bookstores nationwide.

Nature Republic Aloe Vera Soothing Gel

What it is

Moisturizer, basically. It’s one of those basic moisturizers that has no fancy tricks or gimmicks, but is just generally good all around. The sort of thing you want on your cheeks and t-zone when you’re about to go to bed. Or a great gift for a friend who like, wants to get into facial care but doesn’t know where to start. So, this stuff, a bottle of Cetaphil, maybe a little coconut oil.

What we learned

Some joys can only be found in the steadiness of routine. Apply regularly.

Where to get it

Any branch of the Nature Republic.

The Week Was Long But My Heart Is Calm

For this playlist, the goal is to transport you to a place of serenity with electronic textures. It’s a mix of easy going highs and lows, as we’ve integrated both math rock and contemporary R&B into the track list. Complement with a cup of English Breakfast tea, or however long you wanna stay in bed after you’ve woken up.
