In YS Portfolio, we take a look at the work of up and coming artists, their inspiration and the process behind it.

Have you visited a Starbucks Reserve recently? If yes, you might have noticed that these Starbucks stores are different from the Starbucks that we all know and love. For one, there’s even more coffee options. They’ve also got  wall art made by some pretty awesome local artists.

For their 17th Starbucks Reserve store in Assembly Grounds, Starbucks partnered up with JP Pining, an artist who creates abstract murals featuring bright colors and bold strokes that would catch your eye wherever you are. JP’s created street murals and wall art for some bars and restaurants around the country and even abroad, so you’ve probably seen his work once or twice.

Young STAR: How would you describe your art style?

JP Pining: I don’t usually label what my art style is. I just let others describe what they think of my style. Because there are always changes and improvements, I don’t want to be specific. One thing is for sure, I love line art!

What made you adopt the bright-colored and bold-shaped style?

Colors can make any subject alive.

Where do you take inspiration from?

What are your top three favorite works? What’s the story behind each?

Because it’s Starbucks! A very well-known brand worldwide. Sinong mag aakalang bumibili lang ako ng Mocha Frappe Venti dito then makakagawa pala ako ng artwork for them.

It’s on their 1000th store!

This was my first sold canvas painting on a gallery. It was on a group show at Secret Fresh Gallery.

What are you working on right now?

Right now I’m working on canvas paintings for my solo exhibits in August and October.
