#YSRecos: Where to go this weekend

#YSRecos: Where to go this weekend

End your August right with these fun happenings.

Virgo season has begun, and the -ber months are only a few days away. If you’re looking for something good to cap off your month, here are a few events happening this weekend.

Kapihan against Dictatorship

For time and location, check out their Facebook page.

The concluding event in this week’s series of dissenting demonstrations, Kapihan against Dictatorship aims to be a shared, safe space where participants can discourse about the current political situation, and maybe even come up with new strategies of resistance. Topics up for discussion include: the ongoing war on drugs, Martial Law, and the draft Federalism bill. There is one catch though. The event page doesn’t have an address, and instead calls those interested to contact the organizers by number or email in order to gain information on the venue.

All Killer, No Filler: Effective Writing and Content Creation in the age of Social Media

August 26 (Saturday), 10 a.m. at Raffles Makati

National Book Store is back for another year of discussions on our favorite pastimes: reading and writing. Of course we here at Young STAR can’t miss out on the fun. We’ve gathered our personal social media #kweens Coco Quizon, YStyle’s Martin Yambao, and our very own Tin Sartorio to talk about writing in the age of social media. From optimal posting times to the perfect caption length to getting the right emoji combinations, we’ve got you covered. And the best part is, it’s all for free.

Escolta Block Party

August 26, Escolta Street

The quarterly street gathering is happening again this Saturday, featuring another full day of activities. Feel the spirit of the historic street with (free!) design talks by seasoned creatives like TEAM’s Paolo Lorenzana and And A Half’s Mike Parker, plus other fun activities like coffee tasting (also free) and a crocheting workshop (P200 per participant, materials included). While you’re there, check out TRAVESTIES, a new installation by Leeroy New at the HUB: Make Lab and drop by the First United Building for new drops from The Twelfth House. Don’t forget to stay for the sunset jams by the Sorry Sorry Band!

Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino Extension

Aug 23-29, Cinema ’76

Too many movies to catch and deadlines to meet but so little time? Fret no more. One of our #YSFaves, Cinema ‘76, is here to save busy bodies from missing Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino. From August 23 to 29, you can catch Birdshot, Pauwi Na, Paglipay, and more at their humble but great micro-cinema. And to add to that, in observance of National Heroes’ Day on August 28, Cinema ‘76 will also screen Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo, Sunday Beauty Queen, and Heneral Luna! Truly, we will always be thankful for their generosity. Check the schedule on their Facebook page and make time to support our local films this weekend.
