Ebe Dancel gives us a peek into his music library

From road trips to summer soundtracks.

People say that listening to a person’s music library is one of the best ways to get to know them. You get to hear songs that mark an important part in their life, songs that remind them of someone special, songs that get their adrenaline running — the list goes on. This got me thinking: what do musicians listen to? Considering the music that they make, which artists, songs, genres do they subscribe to, and how much of it makes it into the stuff they write? Do they listen to their own music outside of the studio? I could go on forever.

And who better to ask than OPM legend Ebe Dancel? With a career spanning 20 years, Ebe’s was the perfect playlist to peruse. The former Sugarfree frontman celebrated his two-decade anniversary last year, and come end of the month, he’ll be onstage again for his first-ever major solo concert with The Manila String Machine.

With timeless songs about universal experiences, it’s no surprise that Ebe’s concert was sold out in 12 hours last October. That’s what you call staying power. And to make the concert even sweeter for fans, Ebe released a new single called Hanggang Kailan Kita Mahihintay, and teasing that there’s more to come. Read on for a slice of Ebe’s personal playlist, and we’ll see you on the 29th. Get your tear ducts ready.

The perfect song for the start of a road trip

Robbers by the 1975

A song to listen to on a Sunday morning

You Give Me Something by James Morrison. It’s such a hopeful-sounding song, and it’s a great mood booster!

The theme song of the rom-com of your life

Signal Fire by Snow Patrol

The song you listen to at 2:34 a.m.

Home by Bruno Major. (It makes me feel) grateful. Very grateful.

Your go-to shower song

First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes

The first song on your workout playlist

Best of You by The Foo Fighters

Your favorite among the songs you’ve written

Hangover and Lakambini. Lyrically, I think these are some of my favorites.

Your favorite song to perform

Bawat Daan. Everybody loves singing to this song!

A song from the setlist of your upcoming concert

Wala Nang Hihilingin. Along with Hangover, this is my favorite song that I wrote for the band. Making the setlist was hard — I had to leave so many songs out. It’s difficult to play more than 20 songs, and I don’t wanna bore the audience with a three-hour show.

A song that makes you cry

Friends and Lovers by Incubus

The soundtrack of your favorite summer

After Hours by We Are Scientists. In three words: Freedom. Love. Peace.

Your favorite song of all time

Moon River. My mom used to sing this song to herself all the time. Doesn’t matter which version, really; but personally my favorite is Audrey Hepburn’s.

The song you’re listening to on loop right now

Darating by Teeth. This really is one of my favorite OPM songs of all time.

Ebe Dancel with The Manila String Machine is happening on Saturday, Feb. 29 at the Metrotent Convention Center in Ortigas. For updates, follow @ebedancel and the hashtags #EbeDancelXMSM #Ebe20Years on social media.
